Adriana

FIRST WEEK

My first picture was taken in Varadero, Cuba with iPhone 4s. It is of the beach in Varadero.

This is a reflex camera. The reflex camera shows the exact image being taken.

This is a rangefinder camera.

Diaphragm. Smaller the aperture of the diaphragm less light goes into the camera.

SECOND WEEK

I couldn't find my actual favorite picture online since it's very old, but this one is high up on my list of favorite pictures. It is by Jody MacDonald and it features Rajan, the last swimming elephant and his caretaker for 30yrs. I love the landscape, and the different proportions shown with the massive elephant dwarfed by the trees and the human dwarfed by everything else. (It is also one of my favorites because I have a weird obsession with elephants).

Above is a picture of the shutter speed dial of a camera. Each number on the dial is called a stop. Speed in photography refers to the shutter speed or exposure time which would be the effective length of time a camera's shutter is open to let in light. The lesser the speed more light and the faster the speed less light is able to reach the film.

Depth of field (DOF) is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image.

THIRD WEEK

Took this picture over the weekend in Milan with iPhone 4s.

These are some other pictures by Jody MacDonald. She is an adventure sport and documentary style photographer.

When taking pictures guide:
When its sunny: 250/16
Sunny but with clouds: 250/11
Clouds with some sun: 250/8
Cloudy: 124/8 or 60/11

FOURTH WEEK

ISO: In traditional (film) photography ISO (or ASA) was the indication of how sensitive a film was to light. It was measured in numbers (you’ve probably seen them on films – 100, 200, 400, 800 etc). The lower the number the lower the sensitivity of the film and the finer the grain in the shots you’re taking. (Read more: http://digital-photography-school.com/iso-settings#ixzz2K7DOUEP1)

I didn't take any pictures this weekend since I was sick but here is a picture I took of the Golden Gate in San Francisco, California. Taken with my iPhone 4s this past summer vacation.

This picture is by Alex Webb I found it on the Magnum Photos website. I think it shows the invisible lines in photography well. The smoke, the trampoline, the fence, bench, and edge of pool all horizontal.  then vertically the girl, the light post, etc.

FOURTH WEEK

Photographer: I chose Irving Penn as my photographer.
"Irving Penn is one of the more influential fashion and portrait photographers of the 20th century. He easily combined classical flair with minimalist style to capture the imagination of readers and museum lovers around the world. His work with Vogue is particularly noted to have had a lasting influence in the world of fashion photography." (http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/photography/articles/73772.aspx)

Here are some of his photographs:

FIFTH WEEK

I call this one "Grazie Professore" taken with iPhone 4s.

This is a picture I really like by Matt Vogel. I like the effect of the blurred background.
At 22, Matt has been featured in magazines like AP for his pictures of bands, which is what most of his albums consist of. Below is an example of his work with a band called Of Mice and Men at Warped Tour 2012.

Here is the link to his site: http://mattvogelphoto.com

This picture is taken by Irving Penn the photographer I chose. I like the use of shadow and light in this photo as well as the sharpness and focus around the eye and the man's wrinkles.

SIXTH WEEK

This picture I took a few weekends ago when we went to Venice for Carnaval.

Here is an article from the New York Times on Irving Penn that I found interesting.
link: http://www.nytimes.com/1991/11/24/arts/art-irving-penn-is-difficult-can-t-you-tell.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm

Mr. Penn, a failed painter, said art means more to him as visual experience than photographs do. "I feed on art more than I ever do on photographs. I can admire photography, but I wouldn't go to it out of hunger." He said he has trouble even thinking of photographs today he would cross the street to see.
"The greatest privilege I've had in photography," he said, "is a change of diet," by which he meant not being a specialist. In one week in 1950, in the same studio, against the same bare background, he could photograph the French collections, Giacometti, anonymous butchers and glaziers. "The butchers in between invigorated the fashions. To me it was like a balanced meal." For his audience it is more like a very rich diet, not to be taken lightly.

SEVENTH WEEK

I took this picture last Thursday during my archaeology class at the roman forum.

As an anthropologist I'm absolutely enthralled by Irving Penn's photos from New Guinea

This one is titled Cat Woman and it was in taken in 1970.

Another work of his that I like are the set of corner photos.

Georgia O'Keeffe, New York, 1948

Marcel Duchamp, New York, 1948

Part I. Technical Review   (40 points)
Suppose your camera has the following settings:
aperture f1.8  f2.8  f4  f5.6  f8  f11  f16  f22
shutter    B  1   2   4    8   15   30  60  125  250  500   1000
(It is a manual slr film camera with a 50mm 1:1.8 lens.)
1.            Which f-stop allows the most light in? –depends on the lens; f1.8 (-# more light)
2.            Which allows the least? F22 (+# less light)
3.            Which will give the most depth of field? F22
4.            What does depth-of-field mean? Distance between nearest and farthest objects appear sharp
5.            Where is the aperture diaphragm located? –in the lens
6.            How is aperture measured? Lens diaphragm gear
7.            Which f-stop allows half the amount of light as f5.6? f8 (every stop is .5, 11 would be )
8.            Which allows twice the light as f5.6? 4
9.            What does focal length refer to? -Distance between frontal lens to the film/shutter.
10.        Besides aperture, what is another factor that affects depth of field? -Focus and distance from the object
11.        Where is the depth of field scale located (on a traditional slr)? –close to the diaphragm
12.        What is the shutter and what does it control? Control the speed of open and close of the shutter, ie how much light is let in.
13.        How is shutter speed measured? Where is located?shutter speed gear (B-1000) On top or sometimes close to the diaphragm gear in the lense.
14.        Where is the shutter located? Inside the camera
15.        What kind of shutter speed is needed in low light conditions? Slow speed to let more light in.
16.         What does “B” refer to? Shutter always open
17.        What is the safest slow shutter speed without a tripod? 60
18.        Which ss allows twice as much light as “60”(1/60)? 125
19.        Which allows half as much light as “60”? 30
20.        (4 points) On a given day, your camera gives you a correct reading of f4  at 250.  What other configurations would give you the same amount of light and a greater depth of field? (list four ways).
5,6/125
8/60
11/30
21.        Which would give you the same amount (as above) of light and allow you to create a blurred picture of a speeding car?
            1.8/1000
22.        Which shutter speed would give you the same amount of light (as above, question 20) at  f2.8? 500
23.        On a shadowy area with a bright sky,  how would you insure a correct exposure of a subject in shadow?
Measure the light of the shadows, and control the lights of the shadow and increase the aperture
24.        (4 p)Which is a better setting, f4 at 1/60, or  f 16 at 1/4 ? Say why.
4/60 because you don’t need the tripod.
25.        What does ISO refer to?
indication of how sensitive a film is to light. The lower the number the lower the sensitivity of the film and the finer the grain in the shots you’re taking.
26.        What is a fast film and when should it be used?
Film that is very sensitive to light. have high ISO ratings (1600)
27.        What is the major problem with fast films?
 more grainy
28.        What are the three chemical steps used in printing a photograph?
Developer. Water. Fixer
29.        List two (2 p) ways exposure is controlled in the darkroom.

How is contrast manipulated in the darkroom?
Timer and filter
