So far I have nearly no experience with photography, save for the the occasional family portrait and vacation shots. However, I have many friends who took photography in high school and in college, so I am used to seeing the process without knowing much about the techniques behind it.

| Diaphragm: The diaphragm is responsible for controlling the amount of light that goes into the camera. A higher number corresponds to a smaller hold, which lets in less light than a larger hole. |

Alec Soth Photogrpahy
"Alec Soth’s work is rooted in the distinctly American tradition of ‘on-the-road photography’ developed by Walker Evans, Robert Frank and Stephen Shore. From Huckleberry Finn to Easy Rider there seems to be a uniquely American desire to travel and chronicle the adventures that consequently ensue. He has received fellowships from the McKnight, Bush, and Jerome Foundations and was the recipient of the 2003 Santa Fe Prize for Photography. His photographs are represented in major public and private collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Walker Art Center. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney Biennial and a career survey at the Jeu de Paume in 2008."
I chose Alec Soth because I noticed that he has a tendency to put his subjects in the center of the frame. This is something that I usually do not find appealing in photographs, but I think he really makes it work in some of his photos.

Depth of Field
"In optics, particularly as it relates to film and photography, depth of field is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image. Although a lens can precisely focus at only one distance at a time, the decrease in sharpness is gradual on each side of the focused distance, so that within the DOF, the unsharpness is imperceptible under normal viewing conditions."

Paulo Mittelman Photography
"At Paulo Mittelman, born October 5, 1952, is a clinical psychologist and photographer, and started shooting at 16. At 17 had already assembled a small laboratory where homemade revealed and amplified their photos. He joined the Brazilian Association of Photographic Art (ABAF) in August 2007 in the category aspirant, having won the Photo of the Year, Color mode and Photo of the Year, BW mode in its category, being promoted to the veterancategory at the end, 2008. (Continued on his website)."
I chose Paul Mittelman because I really enjoy his use of color. Although I am in a black and white photography class, I am very interested in the pairings of exquisite, but especially unexpected colors together. I think Paul Mittelman does this incredibly well. I have gotten tired of seeing stunning blues of the ocean and the lush greens of a forest. I really enjoy colors that are unique and surprising.

Chris Arnade Photography
I chose this week's photographer not because I think the images are particularly beautiful or artistically composed, but because I am inspired by the subjects of his photography. Chris Arnade met and photographed some of the residents of Hunts Point in NYC, which is known for being filled with addicts and prostitutes. The full compilation of photographs is titled 'Faces of Addiction' and each photograph is paired with a brief description of each person's life story, which I have included. I think work like this is important because it educates people as well as puts our own problems into perspective. Everyone knows that poverty and drug abuse exists, but Arnade's work puts names and beautifully photographed faces to the numbers.
The following is Arnade's description of his work:
"The stories of addicts in Hunts Point neighborhood, the poorest in all of New York City. I post people's stories as they tell them to me.
What I am hoping to do, by allowing my subjects to share their dreams and burdens with the viewer and by photographing them with respect, is to show that everyone, regardless of their station in life, is as valid as anyone else.
Its easy to ignore others. By not looking, by not talking to them, we can fall into constructing our own narrative that affirms our limited world view."

Midterm
1. Which f-stop allows the most light in?
f 1.8
2. Which allows the least?
f 22
3. Which will give the most depth of field?
f 1.8
4. What does depth-of-field mean?
The distance between the closest and furthest
objects in a photograph that in focus and appear sharp
5. Where is the aperture
diaphragm located?
The aperture diaphragm is located in the
light path of a lens. The diaphragm
stops light from passing through into the lens, and light is only allowed
through the aperture, which is adjusted based on which f stop it is set on.
6. How is aperture measured?
The aperture is measured in f stops.
7. Which f-stop allows half the amount of
light as f5.6?
f 11
8. Which allows twice the light as f5.6?
f
2.8
9. What does focal length refer
to?
Focal length is the
distance between the camera and the object that camera is focusing on
10. Besides aperture, what is another factor
that affects depth of field?
The focal length of the
lens
11. Where is the depth of field scale located
(on a traditional slr)?
The depth of field scale
is located near the diaphragm
12. What is the shutter and
what does it control?
The shutter acts as a
doorway that opens and closes to allow light into the camera for a given amount
of time to expose the film.
13. How is shutter speed measured?
Shutter
speed is measured in fractions of a second.
14. Where is the shutter located?
The
shutter is located behind the lens
15. What kind of shutter speed is needed in
low light conditions?
Low
light conditions need a slow shutter speed in order to let more light in
16. What does “B” refer to?
The “B” shutter
speed setting allows you to keep the shutter open as long as you are holding
down the capture button.
17. What is the safest slow shutter speed
without a tripod?
1/30th
of a second
18. Which ss allows twice as much light as
“60”(1/60)?
1/30th of a
second
19. Which allows half as much light as “60”?
1/125th
of a second
20. (4 points) On a given day, your camera
gives you a correct reading of f4 at
250. What other configurations would give you the same
amount of light and a greater
depth of field? (list four ways).
f11 at 1/30, f16 at
1/15, f8 at 1/60, f5.6 at 1/125
21. Which would give you the same amount (as
above) of light and allow you to create a blurred picture of a
speeding car?
f8 at 1/60
22. Which shutter speed would give
you the same amount of light (as above, question 20) at f2.8?
1/500
23. On a shadowy area with a bright
sky, how would you insure a correct exposure of a subject in shadow?
f11 at 1/250
24. (4 p)Which is a better setting, f4 at
1/60, or f 16 at 1/4 ? Say why.
f4 at 1/60 will give you
a better image because the shutter speed is faster, and the aperature is larger
in order to compensate. ¼ is too slow of
a shutter speed.
25. What does ISO refer to?
ISO
refers to the film’s sensitivity to light.
A lower number means the film is less sensitive and a higher number
means the film is more sensitive. High
ISO also results in poorer quality images.
26. What is a fast film and when should it be
used?
Fast film is very
sensitive to be light, it should be used in very low light areas.
27. What is the major problem with fast films?
The main problem with
fast films is that the image quality tends to be very poor (grainy)
28. What are the three chemical steps used in
printing a photograph?
Developer, water, fixer
29. List two (2 p) ways exposure is controlled in the
darkroom.
Length of time exposed
to light, aperture of exposed light
30. How is contrast manipulated in the
darkroom?
Contrast is manipulated
by how strong the filter is
